Unlike the tri-fold, no panel is hidden inside another all panels are equal width. Useful for step-by-step content, timelines, maps, and multilingual pieces where each panel needs to stand independently.

Setup: All panels are equal width. A4 sheet produces three equal panels of approximately 99mm each.

Gate Fold

Two outer panels fold inward to meet at the centre, creating a dramatic reveal when opened. The centre spread revealed when both gates open is typically used for a hero image, large product shot, or key message. Gate folds require heavier paper stock (minimum 150 gsm) to support the weight of the outer panels without sagging.

Setup: Centre panel is double the width of each outer panel. On an A3 sheet: outer panels approximately 99mm, centre panel approximately 198mm.

Double Gate Fold

File Preparation Technical Specifications

Colour Mode: CMYK

All artwork for commercial printing must be set up in CMYK (Cyan, Magenta, Yellow, Key/Black) colour mode. RGB colour mode is designed for screen display and uses a different colour gamut when RGB files are converted to CMYK at print time, colours can shift significantly, particularly blues, purples, and vibrant greens. Convert all files to CMYK before submitting.

Resolution: 300 DPI Minimum

Images must be a minimum of 300 DPI (dots per inch) at the final print size. Images sourced from websites are typically 72–96 DPI and will appear pixelated and soft when printed. Scaling a low-resolution image up in your design software does not increase its actual resolution. Always use original, high-resolution image files.

Bleed: 3mm on All Sides

Bleed is artwork that extends beyond the final trim edge. It is required whenever a colour, image, or background extends to the edge of the finished piece. The press cannot print precisely to the very edge of the sheet paper is printed on a larger sheet and then trimmed. Without bleed, small variations in the cutting position result in a thin white border appearing on the edge. Standard bleed in Australian commercial printing is 3mm on all sides.

Bleed setup example for A4 tri-fold:

  • Document size without bleed: 295 × 210mm (note: reduced from 297mm for tri-fold panel compensation)

Safe Zone: 5mm Inside Trim Edge

Keep all critical content text, logos, important graphic elements at least 5mm inside the final trim line. Content placed too close to the trim edge risks being cut off due to normal production tolerances.

Fold Allowance for Tri-Fold Brochures

The inner panel of a tri-fold must be set 2–3mm narrower than the two outer panels. This compensates for the paper thickness: when the inner panel is folded inside the outer panels, the fold adds physical bulk. If all three panels are equal width, the inner panel will protrude slightly beyond the outer panels when folded, causing the finished piece to look misaligned. The exact reduction required varies based on paper weight; heavier stocks require a larger reduction.

Fonts: Embed or Outline

All fonts used in artwork must be either embedded in the exported PDF or converted to outlines (curves) in the design software before exporting. Fonts that are not embedded or outlined will substitute for a system default font at the print provider’s end, which can cause text to reflow, change appearance, or display incorrectly.

File Format

Export as PDF/X-1a or PDF/X-4. These are standardised PDF formats created specifically for print production; they embed all fonts, convert colours to CMYK, and include bleed and crop marks. Digital vs Offset Printing for Brochures

Digital Printing

Artwork is sent directly from a computer file to the press. No plates are required. Cost-effective for short runs (typically under 500–1,000 units). Turnaround is faster because there is no plate-making stage. Allows variable data; each copy can include personalised elements such as a name, address, or unique code. Print quality is sufficient for the majority of commercial brochure applications.

Offset Printing

Artwork is transferred to metal plates, which apply ink to a rubber blanket, which then transfers to the paper. Higher setup cost due to plate production. Becomes more cost-effective than digital above approximately 1,000 units. Produces consistent, accurate colour across very long runs. A wider range of special inks including Pantone spot colours, metallic inks, and fluorescent inks are available in offset that are not achievable with digital presses.
